District of Columbia address reference
Washington, DC is not a state — and that breaks forms
The District of Columbia appears in the state dropdown of most US forms as "DC", yet it is a federal district, not a state — a classic source of validation bugs. DC street addresses carry a quadrant suffix (NW, NE, SW or SE, e.g. "1600 K St NW") because the same street name can exist in four quadrants. ZIP codes sit in the 20001–20599 range and nearly all phone numbers use the 202 area code.
How to fill District of Columbia addresses into forms
- Street Address takes the house number and street name.
- City must be one of the District of Columbia sample cities, e.g. Washington.
- State accepts either the full name "District of Columbia" or the two-letter code "DC".
- ZIP Code has to match the selected city — mixing regions is the most common validation failure.
